Grading NFL Cards
By The Sport Cave Team2 min read
Professional grading is central to the football hobby, where a strong grade on a star rookie can add enormous value. A graded card is authenticated, condition-scored, and sealed in a protective holder. This guide supports our full NFL trading cards guide.
How grading works
You submit a card to a grading company, which authenticates it and scores its condition on a 1-to-10 scale, weighing four factors: centering, corners, edges, and surface. The card is then sealed in a slab with its grade and a unique certification number. Authentication is especially important for football's valuable autographs, where verifying a genuine on-card signature protects buyers.
The main grading companies
- PSA — the largest and most recognized grader, and PSA-graded cards typically command the strongest premiums, especially for star rookies. A PSA 10 is the benchmark much of the market chases.
- BGS (Beckett) — favored for modern cards and autographs, known for subgrades and the coveted Black Label 10. Popular for premium rookie autos and patch cards.
- SGC — respected for vintage and increasingly used across the board for consistency and turnaround.
Why grading matters
Grading authenticates and standardizes condition, letting buyers and sellers speak the same language. The value impact is significant: a star rookie in a pristine 10 can be worth many times the same card in a 9, and raw cards sell at a discount because of condition uncertainty. For autographed cards, grading also verifies the signature's authenticity.
When is it worth grading?
- Grade high-value cards — star (especially quarterback) rookies, autos, and low-numbered parallels where a strong grade and authentication add real value.
- Grade cards you believe are near-mint or better. Fees make grading rarely worthwhile for common cards or those with visible flaws.
- Inspect all four factors first. Centering, corners, edges, and surface all matter; pre-grading yourself saves money on cards that won't grade well.
- Weigh the cost. Fees, shipping, and turnaround factor in; for a modest card the fee can exceed the value added.
A strong grade turns a nice card into one of the most valuable cards, and graded cards are the standard when you buy and sell.
