Champions at last: the Hurricanes win it all and set up for a Cup defense

After years of knocking on the door, the Carolina Hurricanes finally broke through, winning the 2026 Stanley Cup — their first championship since 2006 — with a Game 6 clincher over the Vegas Golden Knights. For a franchise that had been a perennial contender without the ultimate reward, it was a long-awaited breakthrough, and the way the roster is built has Carolina positioned to defend it.

A model roster

The Hurricanes are a case study in modern roster construction, blending ascending young stars, prime-age horses, and veteran stalwarts. Rising early-20s talents like Seth Jarvis, Logan Stankoven, and Jackson Blake provide cost-controlled upside; prime players like Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov, and K'Andre Miller drive the roster; and veterans like Jaccob Slavin, Nikolaj Ehlers, Jordan Staal, and Taylor Hall provide experience and depth. Under longtime head coach Rod Brind'Amour — himself a Carolina Cup hero as a player — that balanced group finally reached the summit.

The one big question

The primary offseason issue is in goal. Frederik Andersen, who elevated his game in the playoffs, is a pending free agent who turns 37 and may not return, while rookie Brandon Bussi — who went from the waiver wire to skating the Stanley Cup — projects to remain the No. 1. Sorting out the crease, along with re-signing restricted free agent defenseman Alexander Nikishin, headlines general manager Eric Tulsky's to-do list. Most of the roster, though, is signed through at least next season.

Season outlook

The Hurricanes enter 2026-27 as defending champions, set up as well as any team in the league for a title defense. The core is intact, the roster is deep and balanced, and Brind'Amour's structure remains one of the NHL's best. The goaltending question is real, but if Bussi builds on his championship run and the roster stays healthy, Carolina has every reason to believe it can contend again. After finally getting over the hump, the Hurricanes will raise their banner on opening night and set out to prove the breakthrough was the start of something.
