The drought is over: Buffalo's young core arrives and the Sabres eye a playoff streak

After years in the wilderness, the Buffalo Sabres finally broke through, ending a long playoff drought in 2025-26. Now the challenge shifts from making the playoffs to staying there, and Buffalo's rising young core gives it a real chance to turn a single berth into a genuine streak.

A young core coming into its own

The Sabres are built around an ascending group of talent. Top goal scorer Tage Thompson leads a forward corps that includes breakout two-way forwards Josh Doan and Zach Benson, both locked up long-term, plus defenseman Owen Power and captain Rasmus Dahlin anchoring the blue line. Perhaps most exciting, promising young center Konsta Helenius is no longer blocked and projects as a full-time NHLer and a Calder Trophy threat. The progression of this young generation is the story of Buffalo's future, and it's arriving right on time.

Offsetting a key loss

The offseason wasn't without a blow — forward Alex Tuch departed in free agency, signing with Washington. Losing a productive top-six winger stings, but the Sabres are betting that the internal growth of their young players offsets it. Buffalo also reinforced its blue line, acquiring defenseman Olen Zellweger from Anaheim to bolster its top four. With cap space still available after re-signing Peyton Krebs, the Sabres retain the flexibility to make another addition.

Season outlook

Buffalo enters 2026-27 with real momentum, having posted one of the NHL's best records over the second half of last season. The playoff drought is over, and the young core is only getting better. In a loaded Atlantic Division, nothing comes easy, and the loss of Tuch is a legitimate question. But if Thompson, Power, Dahlin, and the rising youngsters take another step — and Helenius delivers on his promise — the Sabres have the talent to establish themselves as a playoff regular. After all those lean years, Buffalo's arrow is finally, firmly, pointing up.
