NFL Futures & Super Bowl Odds
By The Sport Cave Team2 min read
Futures are long-term bets on outcomes that resolve weeks or months down the line — most famously, who will win the Super Bowl. They reward foresight and patience, and they're a staple of the NFL betting calendar. This guide expands on our full NFL betting guide.
What are NFL futures?
A futures bet is a wager on a season-long or long-range outcome rather than a single game. You lock in a price now, and the bet resolves when the outcome is decided. The upside is that early prices are often more generous — betting a contender to win the Super Bowl in the summer pays far more than betting the same team in January. The downside is that your money is tied up for the duration, and injuries or slumps can sink a ticket you can't easily exit.
The main NFL futures markets
Super Bowl odds
The headline futures market. Every team is priced to win the championship, from short favorites to long shots at hundreds-to-one. Super Bowl futures are available year-round and move constantly as teams win, lose, and suffer injuries.
Conference and division winners
Narrower than the Super Bowl market and often better value for bettors who have a strong read on a specific division or conference. Division futures in particular can offer attractive prices on teams the wider market underrates.
Season win totals
Before the season, sportsbooks post an over/under on each team's regular-season wins — say, 9.5. You bet whether the team finishes above or below that number. Win totals are a favorite of analytical bettors because they reward projecting a team's schedule, roster changes, and health over a full season.
Awards: MVP and more
MVP is the marquee award market, and in the modern NFL it heavily favors quarterbacks on winning teams — narrative and team success matter as much as raw statistics. Other award and stat-leader futures (Offensive Player of the Year, passing-yards leader, and so on) round out the menu.
When to bet futures
- Early, for the best price. Futures value is usually highest before and early in the season, before results tighten the odds. Betting a team you believe in before the market catches on captures the most upside.
- Around news. A key injury, a coaching change, or a hot streak can create temporary value windows on both sides of a futures market.
- Hedging. If a long-shot futures ticket is still alive deep into the playoffs, you can sometimes bet against it late to lock in a guaranteed profit — a classic use of live markets to protect a future.
A note on tied-up money
Because futures don't resolve for months, treat the stake as committed capital. Bet an amount you're comfortable setting aside, and remember that even a great futures bet can be undone by a single injury. The long payoff is the appeal and the risk.
