NFL Moneylines & Totals

Not every NFL bet involves a point spread. The moneyline and the total are two of the most important markets in football, and each offers value the spread doesn't. This guide complements our full NFL betting guide.

NFL moneyline betting

A moneyline bet is the simplest wager there is: pick who wins, straight up. The margin is irrelevant. What changes is the price. Favorites carry a minus number reflecting the cost of backing the more likely winner — a heavy favorite might be -280, meaning you'd risk $280 to win $100. Underdogs carry a plus number — a +240 underdog returns $240 on a $100 stake.

The moneyline shines in two situations. First, in tight matchups where the spread is small (a pick'em or a field goal), betting the underdog to simply win outright can offer better value than laying the points. Second, when you believe a live underdog will win outright, the moneyline pays far more than the spread. The trade-off is that you give up the cushion the spread provides — a moneyline underdog has to actually win, not just keep it close.

Comparing the moneyline to the spread reveals how the market views a game. A -6.5 favorite priced around -280 on the moneyline tells you the book sees a comfortable but not overwhelming edge. Reading both numbers together sharpens your sense of a game's true probabilities.

NFL totals (over/under)

The total is the combined points both teams are expected to score. If a game is set at 47.5, an over bet cashes if the teams combine for 48 or more; the under cashes at 47 or fewer. You're not betting on either team — you're betting on the game's overall scoring environment.

What moves NFL totals

• Weather. Wind is the great total-killer — strong gusts wreck passing and kicking games and push scoring down. Cold and precipitation matter less than wind but still nudge totals lower. Domes and warm-weather games trend the other way.
• Pace and style. Teams that play fast, pass often, and go for it on fourth down generate more possessions and points. Ball-control, run-heavy teams drain the clock and suppress totals.
• Matchup quality. Two strong offenses against weak defenses point over; two elite defenses point under. Injuries to key skill players or defensive backs move the number.
• Game script. A game expected to be a blowout can go under as the leader runs clock, or over if a shootout develops. Anticipating how a game will actually unfold is the art of totals betting.

Practical tips

• Check the forecast for outdoor games before betting a total, especially wind speed.
• Fade public overs in bad weather. Casual bettors love overs; sharp money often finds value on unders in ugly conditions.
• Consider team totals. If you like one offense but not the other, betting a single team's total sidesteps the uncertainty of the opponent.
