What is a player prop?

A player prop (short for proposition bet) is a wager on a specific individual statistic. Will the quarterback throw for more or fewer than 267.5 passing yards? Will the running back exceed 74.5 rushing yards? Will a given receiver score a touchdown at any point in the game? Props turn every position and nearly every play into a potential bet.

The main NFL prop categories

Passing props

Quarterback props are the most heavily bet, led by passing yards, passing touchdowns, and completions. Passing-yard lines are set based on the QB's form, the opponent's pass defense, and the expected game script — a team likely to trail may throw more, pushing the yardage line up.

Rushing and receiving props

Rushing yards, receiving yards, and receptions are staples. Receptions props in particular reward research into target share — a receiver or back who commands a large, stable share of his team's targets offers a more predictable floor than a boom-or-bust deep threat.

Touchdown props

The anytime touchdown scorer is the most popular NFL prop of all — a simple bet that a given player finds the end zone at least once. Goal-line backs and red-zone target hogs are the classic anytime-TD plays. Sportsbooks also offer first touchdown scorer (higher risk, higher reward) and multi-touchdown props.

Alternate lines

Most props come with alternate lines — you can take a lower yardage threshold for a worse price (safer) or a higher one for a better payout (riskier). Alternate lines let you tailor a prop to your confidence level and are a useful tool for building same-game parlays.

How to find prop value

• Study usage, not names. Props are about volume and role. A lesser-known back who just inherited a starting job may be badly underpriced while the market catches up.
• Target the matchup. A receiver facing a weak secondary, or a back facing a defense soft against the run, is where prop edges hide.
• Factor in game script. Blowouts change everything — starters sit, and passing teams that fall behind throw more. Project how the game flows.
• Watch injury news. A ruled-out teammate can spike a player's expected workload. Late news is where prop value appears and disappears quickly.
• Line-shop props hard. Prop lines vary more between sportsbooks than main markets do, because they're harder to price. That variance is opportunity.
