The historic license change
For years, Panini held the exclusive NFL license and defined modern football collecting. That ended on April 1, 2026, when the exclusive NFL and NFLPA rights moved to Fanatics (through Topps) on a long-term deal. The first product, 2025 Topps Chrome Football, launched in mid-April 2026. This was the final piece of a sweeping consolidation that also gave Fanatics the MLB and NBA licenses.
Practically, this means fully licensed NFL cards — with team logos, uniforms, and league branding — now come from Topps/Fanatics. Panini can still produce football cards through its players-association rights, but without team logos or league marks (players appear in generic or blurred uniforms), a meaningful change in how those products look and, historically, what collectors pay for them.
The Panini era that defined the modern hobby
Panini-era products remain central to the secondary market because they contain the rookies of nearly every current and recent star:
- Prizm — the flagship of the modern football hobby, famous for its chromium base and rainbow of colored parallels.
- Playoff Contenders — home of the iconic Rookie Ticket autographs, football's definitive rookie autograph brand.
- National Treasures — the premium end, producing some of the most valuable rookie patch autographs in the hobby.
- Select and Donruss Optic — popular chromium products with chased parallels.
The Topps/Fanatics era
With the license now at Topps/Fanatics, collectors can expect football products modeled on the company's established formats — Topps Chrome, flagship, and premium autograph and memorabilia lines — carrying full NFL licensing. Fanatics also introduced NFL Debut Patch cards (one-of-one autos featuring a patch from a player's first game), mirroring its MLB and NBA programs.
